Quick noise comparison test between the PXW-FS7 and PXW-FS5 cameras from Sony.
I took some time this morning to do a side by side comparison of noise between the FS7 and FS5 cameras. I shot them both in HD to give the FS5 a fair chance since it drops to 8-bit recording in 4k. Noise suppression was turned off in both cameras and exposure was set using a waveform monitor. In addition I recorded both XAVC L and XAVC I codecs on the FS7 to add another layer of comparison between the two cameras.
Results
The difference in noise performance becomes really clear when you zoom in to 400%. The FS7 has a much cleaner rendering of the shadows than the FS5. That is not to say that the FS5 performs poorly, just that it isn’t as good as the FS7. It should not really come as any surprise that an $8,000 camera out performs a $5,500 camera.
