American Cinematographer Magazine recently published a front-page article about HBO’s new series, ‘Vinyl,’ a project hatched by Martin Scorsese, Terry Winter and Mick Jagger. The series stars Bobby Cannavale as Richie Finestra, the head of a fictional record company in the 1970’s on the verge of collapse. The pilot was shot by Rodrigo Prieto (who teamed with Scorsese and Winter on The Wolf of Wall Street) and subsequent episodes are being handled by fellow cinematographers Reed Morano and David Franco.
The article describes in depth the way Prieto was able to achieve a realistic film-grain look using a CineAlta Sony F55 and texturing tool LiveGrain, created by technologist and director-cinematographer Suny Behar. It is a very interesting read.
