Sony FX5

Sony announces the release of their new flagship cinema camera: The FX5. This succeeds their latest camera in the cinema line, the FX9, yet it look to compete with the size of their FX3 and FX6 models. The FX5 can record 5K internal raw at up to 60fps. It supports Dual Gain shooting, three base ISO settings, and boasts a new image sensor with 15 stops of dynamic range. The BIONZ XR2 engine with AI processing is sure to handle everything that you throw at the camera, with features such as Auto Tracing White Balance and improved Auto Focus. Here are some of the other impressive features of the camera.
The FX5 can record 96kHz/32-bit float audio. The camera comes with a 3.5mm stereo input jack, but you can increase it’s audio capabilities with the new XLRH2B handle with audio interface. This gives you 2 XLR inputs with controls on the opposite side.
The FX5 also comes equipped with a full-size HDMI output, a 2.5G ethernet port for data and remote control, a 3.5mm headphone output, and two USB-C jacks for various data and power transfer. Sony announced the VMCBNCU1B USB-C to BNC adapter for easy timecode jamming with the new FX5.
Many features you’ve come to know and love have made it to the new FX5 as well. BIG6 controls are back, as are S-Cinetone and other S-Log color gamuts. The FX5 features three S-Log3 modes for flexible workflows. Like most other Cinema Line cameras, the FX5 takes 2x CFExpress cards, and can record to SD Cards as well. It can record in relay, simutaneously, or seperate modes, giving ultimate flexibility for media management.
In place of the XLR Audio handle, you can opt for the new EVF (Electronic View Finder, DVFEL1B). This view finder is tiltable up to 90° and uses an OLED display to provide incredible colors and contrast. The EVF has a 10-bit display, HDR support, and uses over 7 million dots to ensure you’re capturing exactly what you want to see. Two LEDs on either side of camera show tally, making it easy to see when you’re camera is recording.
The FX5 utilizes a 2670 mAh NP-SA100 battery, which they’ve used for some of their Sony Alpha lines, such as the Sony A7R VI. Sony reports that you can continuously shoot for 170 minutes on a single battery. A new cooling system will provide 3x the airflow of previous models, and ensures you can shoot the precious moments without overheating.
The back screen can be tilted outwards and face the front or the back of the camera for easy monitoring. It can also be placed directly on the back of the camera with the option to tilt upwards or downwards. This clever design guarantees no matter where you are in relation to the camera, you will always be able to monitor the shot.
