The Sony Alpha A7S III camera is a revolutionary update to the venerably A7S II low light camera.  Sony really went all out on the features for this camera, updating and improving pretty much every aspect of its predecessor, while maintaining and exceeding the low light performance that made the A7S II one of the most successful mirrorless cameras ever. You can watch our unboxing here.

The key features of the new camera that really set it apart from anything Sony has put in the Alpha line-up before are; 10:bit 4:2:2 recording in all modes, up to and including several incredible 4k 120p options, several new high-quality codecs, including a new h.265 based XAVC HS, fast hybrid autofocus with face and eye detection and tracking, in-body image stabilization as well as gyro driven active stabilization, new back side illuminated sensor for improved light response, new BIONZ XR image processor for faster read speeds to reduce rolling shutter artifacts, new color science from Sony’s cinema cameras, full-size HDMI port that is capable of sending out a 16-bit RAW signal, fully articulating LCD screen, and so much more.  Read below for further details on these and other amazing features.

New 12.1MP Exmor RS BSI CMOS Sensor with BIONZ XR Image Processor

Sony is giving us a brand new Exmor RS 12.1MP full-frame CMOS sensor with Back Side Illumination, designed to achieve improved clarity, reduce noise, and unparalleled sensitivity. The updated sensor design along with an updated BIONZ XR processor reduces rolling shutter artifacts by 3x. The sensor and processor together give the camera 15 stops of dynamic range when recording video, with a priority on providing clean, rich shadows and pleasing highlight roll-off.

10-Bit 4:2:2 Internal Recording up to 4k 120p

Unlike previous Alpha cameras which were limited to 4k at 30fps, the A7S3 will deliver 4k at up to 120fps without pixel binning or line skipping.  Not only has the frame rate gotten a big boost but the recording quality has as well.  The A7S3 offers 10-bit 4:2:2 sampling in all recording modes.  The camera also got 2 brand new codecs.  XAVC HS is an HEVC/h.265 codec that uses the latest technology in encoding to provide smaller file sizes while retaining all of the visual information.  XAVC S-I is an intraframe codec that offers consistent quality by encoding each and every frame separately and maxes out at a bit rate of 600 Mb/s in 4k 120p.

There have also been improvements in the cameras Full HD recording, offering speeds up to 240fps and 10-bit recording.  The recording time limits have also been removed, allowing the camera to record for as long as the media will allow.  An improved heat dissipating body design is designed to combat overheating problems that are a constant issue with small form factor cameras recording high-quality video.

Sony’s Fast Hybrid Autofocus System

The new Hybrid Autofocus System covers nearly the entire sensor using 759 phase-detection and 425 contrast-detection points to give the camera fast and accurate focus in almost any lighting condition.  The autofocus is available in every recording mode and can be operated through the touch screen and has advanced functions such as object tracing, face detection, and eye detection in humans and animals.  The speed and sensitivity of the autofocus can be adjusted to provide smooth focus transitions and refined subject shifting.

Say goodbye to your gimbal with 5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Image Stabilization

The A7S II inherits true 5-axis in-body stabilization at the sensor which compensates for pitch, yaw, vertical movement, horizontal movement, and roll no matter what lens is attached to the camera, even 3rd party, adapted, and vintage lenses.

For video recording, there is also an Active IS mode that adds an electronic stabilization to the image based on the gyroscopic sensor in the camera that further improves the smoothness of the footage straight out of the camera.
