Adding Quality and Flexibility to Your Stream with a USB Capture Device

As most of us are now working from home we are all looking for ways to keep doing what we normally do, but doing it remotely online. Whether you need to disseminate information to a group of your co-workers, demonstrate product to customers, or stream your service to your congregants, it can be hard to figure out how to do digitally what came naturally in person.

One way easy and relatively affordable way to add more options is to use a USB 3.0 based capture device. These devices let you add just about any external video source as an input to your computer, from cameras, to media players like DVD or Blu-Ray players, to gaming consoles, to other computers. They give you many more options for configuring your system to work in a way that is simple and easy for you to manage.

I recently did a video about one of our favorite devices, the Magewell USB Capture. There are a couple of versions depending on what you need, whether its HDMI, SDI or even DVI input, and if you need loop through and audio inputs. We like the Magewell because of the quality, reliability, and ease of use.

You can see how easy they are to use by checking out the video.

To make this video I used a Magewell USB Capture HDMI Plus, my ASUS gaming laptop and my Sony A7R3 camera. I used OBS to record everything.

The other offerings from Magewell for USB Capture are:
USB Capture HDMI Gen 2
USB Capture SDI Gen 2
USB Capture SDI Plus

They do also make 4k versions of the HDMI Plus and SDI Plus, but for the vast majority of people those would be overkill.
